The Third Annual Surreal Salon will run from Jan. 4-27, 2011 at Baton Rouge Gallery, 1515 Dalrymple Drive. The Third Annual Surreal Salon, which can only be seen at BRG, celebrates the many reasons why this irreverent and exciting movement has come to the forefront of contemporary art in recent years.

The Surreal Salon will feature the works of 27 artists from 11 different states. The work on display will run the gamut from video to sculpture, from photography to paintings.

More than 125 works were submitted from across the nation for consideration by the exhibition's juror. Baton Rouge Gallery is proud to announce the roster of artists selected to participate in the Third Annual Surreal Salon, as chosen by the exhibition's juror, Chris Ryniak:

A variety of free refreshments will be provided during the Soirée.

The Surreal Salon festivities will not stop there. On Jan. 23, the day following the Surreal Salon Soirée, Ryniak will speak at Baton Rouge Gallery as a special engagement of the gallery's popular ARTiculate series. During this engagement, Ryniak provides insight into his work, techniques, inspirations and unique artistic processes. According to Ryniak, "Whatever the medium or outlet that I explore with my work, the message is always the same, and that is to never forget the wondrous world beneath our feet and the treasures it holds between the cracks." Ryniak's presentation is free and open to the public beginning at 4 p.m.

Serving as juror for the Third Annual Surreal Salon, artist and sculptor Chris Ryniak's paintings and sculptures have exhibited in galleries throughout the U.S. including some of the nation's most popular contemporary art galleries: Copro Gallery (Santa Monica, CA), MyPlasticHeart (NYC), Roq La Rue (Seattle, WA), Gallery 1988 (Los Angeles, CA). A rising star of the pop-surrealist movement and contemporary art in general, his work was recently featured at Art Basel, (Miami, FL), inside the pages of popular publications such as Hi-Fructose and Juxtapoz, as well as abroad in Germany, Canada and Italy.

For more information regarding the Third Annual Surreal Salon or any of the festivities scheduled in conjunction with it, please visit batonrougegallery.org or call 225-383-1470.

Baton Rouge Gallery, a BREC facility, is supported in part by funds from the Louisiana State Arts Council, the Louisiana Division of the Arts and the Arts Council of Greater Baton Rouge (through the Decentralized Arts Funding Program). The Gallery also receives support from the Community Fund for the Arts, WRKF, its Community Members and the late Paula Manship.

This fall, Houston Center for Contemporary Craft presents one of its most popular shows, CraftTexas 2010, the sixth in a series of juried exhibitions showcasing the best in Texas-made contemporary craft. This year, 73 works made from clay, fiber, glass, metal, wood or found/recycled materials were selected from a pool of over 460 submissions. Works range in style from traditional to cutting-edge contemporary and were judged on criteria such as technical proficiency, creative and inventive use of medium and innovation in style or concept.

While CraftTexas 2010 features outstanding works in all of the craft media, the exhibition is particularly strong in conceptual jewelry created from innovative and alternative materials. A few of the themes running throughout the exhibition are material re-use and nature, as well as social and political issues. Juror Paula Owen said, “As most of the work submitted for Craft Texas 2010 was both beautiful and provocative, I expect an extraordinary exhibition—one that engages the mind and the senses to the fullest!”

CraftTexas 2010 was juried by Gail M. Brown, independent curator of contemporary craft from Philadelphia, PA; Cindy Hickok, internationally acclaimed fiber artist from Houston, TX; and Paula Owen, president of the Southwest School of Arts and Crafts in San Antonio, TX, and a practicing artist.
